Title: Smart Environments: Methodologies and Applications

Abstract: The notion of smart environment embodies a vision of a physical space populated by networked artefacts (sensors, actuators, processing units) collectively realizing the paradigm of Ambient Intelligence (AmI), i.e., the idea of employing models of (i) the environment, (ii) machines, robots and humans operating inside it, and (iii) goals and preferences, in order to automatically provide intelligent services. As a consequence, the study of smart environments stands at the crossroad between information systems, human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence. This seminar will discuss different solutions applied to the challenging application scenarios of smart homes, smart factories and smart cities proposing a research roadmap. In particular, the seminar will focus on the application of (i) process mining to smart homes, (ii) automated planning to smart factories, and (iii) statistical methods applied to throttling for smart city services.

Bio: Francesco Leotta got a PhD in Engineering in Computer Science from Sapienza Università di Roma in September 2014. The research activity of Francesco Leotta concerns algorithmic, methodological, experimental and practical aspects in different areas of Computer Science, including smart environments and information systems. He regularly serves as a reviewer for internationally renowned journals (e.g., SPE, Intelligent Systems, JAICH) and conferences (e.g., BPM, IE), holding scientific and organizational roles (e.g., recently short paper chair for IE and demo chair for BPM). He is intensively involved in publicly (e.g., H2020 program) and privately (e.g., Industry 4.0 research contracts) funded research projects covering the different aspects of his research activity. Recently, he has been the recipient of the best paper award at IEEE International Conference on Web Services (ICWS 2019).
