Cinzia Daraio is Associate Professor of Management Engineering at the Department of Computer, Control and Management Engineering Antonio Ruberti, University of Rome “La Sapienza” (Italy) where she teaches Efficiency and Productivity Analysis (Master Degree in Management Engineering), Quantitative Models for Economic Analysis and Management (Master Degree in Data Science) and Economics and Business Organization (Undergraduate Degree in Electronic Engineering).
From November 2008 to November 2011 she has been Assistant Professor at the Department of Management, Second School of Engineering, University of Bologna (Italy). From November 2002 to October 2006 she has been research associate at the Institute for Informatics and Telematics of the Italian National Research Council (IIT CNR), Pisa, and, from November 2006 to October 2008, post-doctoral research fellow and teaching assistant at the Department of Electrical Systems and Automation, School of Engineering, University of Pisa (Italy).
She graduated cum laude in Economics and Business in 1999 at the University of Pisa and she obtained a Diploma degree in Economics cum laude in 1999 at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, Pisa. She obtained a Master of Arts in Statistics in 2002 at the Université catholique the Louvain (Belgium); and she got her Ph.D. in Economics and Management in 2003 at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, Pisa (Italy). She is external member of the Laboratory of Economics and Management (LEM) of the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies and has a stable research collaboration with the ISBA Institute, Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium.
RESEARCH INTERESTS AND PROJECTS
Her research focuses on methodological and empirical studies in productivity and efficiency analysis and performance measurement; development of indicators for the quantitative analysis and evaluation of science, technology higher education and research policy.
She has been member of Expert Groups of the European Commission, namely “Building Composite Indicator(s) on the European Research Area (ERA) implementation”, Directorate General for Research and Innovation (November 2013-October 2014) and of the “Expert Group to support the development of tailor-made impact assessment methodologies for ERA”, Directorate General for Research and Innovation (December 2013-October 2014).
She has been appointed as a member of the Commission of Experts for the Evaluation of the Third Mission Activities (CETM) by the Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutions (ANVUR) from October 2015 to May 2017.
She has a consolidated experience in international and national research projects, including PRIME (Policies for the Research in the Move towards the European Research Area) Network of Excellence, Aquameth (Advanced Quantitative Methods for the Evaluation of the Performance of Public Sector Research) that she co-coordinated; OEU (Observatory on the European University) and ENID (European Network of Indicator Designers); Changes in University Incomes tender (CHINC); Innovation Studies (iRiS) Project on “Reorganization of public research’s technological transfer system: governance, tools and strategies” and EUMIDA (European Universities Micro Data) Feasibility Study. In particular, in EUMIDA she was national contact point for Italy and coordinated the data collection for Italy through the National Statistical Authority.
She coordinated the project: Efficiency, Effectiveness and Impact of Universities and Schools (Sapienza University of Rome Research Project n. C26A13ZXRY).
She is currently the coordinator of the following research projects:
-Establishing a Knowledge Infrastructure for the Development of Methodologies for the Assessment of Research and its Impacts (Sapienza Research Projects Awards n. C26H15XNFS).
-EBRP Project: Assessing the Scientific Performance of Regions and Countries at Disciplinary level by means of Robust Nonparametric Methods: new indicators to measure regional and national Scientific Competitiveness.
She is responsible of the Sapienza local unit of the PRIN 2015 Project (Prot. 2015RJARX7): Comparing Governance Regime Changes in Higher Education: systemic performances, national policy dynamics, and institutional responses. A multidisciplinary and mixed methods analysis.
She is responsible of the Sapienza local unit of the Project Research infrastructures for the assessment of science, technology and innovation policy (RISIS), Grant agreement N° 313082 project of the EU FP7 Research Program.
She has been member of the Steering Committee of the Project: European Tertiary Education Register (ETER), Contract No. EAC-2013-038 (2013-2015) and she is currently member of the Steering Committee of the Project: Implement and Disseminate the European Tertiary Education Register (ETER 2015-2017), contract EAC-2015-0280.

She is member of the CFEnetwork (specialized teams on: Applied Econometrics, Computational Econometrics, Econometric Theory) and of the Scientific Committee of the biannual European Workshop on Efficiency and Productivity Analysis (EWEPA).

She has been project evaluator for the Rustaveli National Science Foundation. She has been external reviewer for the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.
She is referee for for more than 35 international peer-reviewed journals.
2003-2014 External member of the Laboratory of Economics and Management (LEM), Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Pisa, Italy, and since 2015 research affiliate of the Institute of Economics of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna.
She has been selected and is listed in Who’s Who in The World (since the 2007 Edition) and in Who’s Who in Science and Engineering (since the 10th Edition of the 2007-2008) edited by Marquis Inc.
She authored a monograph on Advanced Robust and Nonparametric Methods in Efficiency Analysis. Methodology and Applications (with L. Simar) published by Springer (NY) in 2007, and edited a collective book on Universities and Strategic Knowledge Creation: Specialization and Performance in Europe (with A. Bonaccorsi) published by Edward Elgar (Cheltenham) in 2007. In 2015 she edited the Proceedings of the Workshop she organized at Sapienza University of Rome on Efficiency, Effectiveness and Impact of Research and Innovation. She published several works in international peer-reviewed journals including Research Policy, Research Evaluation, Journal of Productivity Analysis, Scientometrics, Science and Public Policy, Minerva, Cambridge Journal of Economics, European Journal of Operational Research, Annals of Operations Research, Journal of Informetrics, Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology (JASIST), Journal of the Operational Research Society and Applied Economics among others.
