Titolo del seminario

Are online platforms effective to support industrial symbiosis?

Abstract

Industrial symbiosis is considered one of the key strategies to support the circular economy. Such a practice deals with replacing production inputs (raw materials, water, energy) required by one production process with wastes generated by other disengaged production processes, belonging to multiple companies.

Although its potential benefits, the implementation of industrial symbiosis by the European companies is below the expected levels, as only 0,1% of companies are known to adopt this practice. From the technical perspective, the mismatch between demand and supply of wastes, exacerbated by the lack of information exchanged among companies potentially interested in the symbiotic approach, is the main barrier that hampers the establishment of industrial symbiosis relationships.

This seminar is aimed at discussing how and the extent to which “online platforms for industrial symbiosis” can mitigate the supply-demand problem, thus supporting the implementation of industrial symbiosis. First, from the methodological perspective, the use of the agent-based simulation as a tool to assess the impact of online platforms for industrial symbiosis will be discussed. Then, the impact of two platform features – i.e., the sensitivity of information companies are required to upload and the number of platform users – on the effectiveness of online platforms for industrial symbiosis will be addressed via two applications based on agent-based simulation. Based on these results, managerial and policy implications will be discussed.

Short bio

Luca Fraccascia is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer, Control, and Management Engineering “Antonio Ruberti” of Sapienza University of Rome, currently qualified to the position of Associate Professor according to the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR). He has got a Ph.D. in Mechanical and Management Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Bari in 2017. Before his current position, Luca was a Postdoctoral Researcher and Assistant Professor at University of Twente (The Netherlands).

His main research interest concerns the implementation strategies of circular economy, from the operational and business perspectives. In particular, Luca is an expert of industrial symbiosis – he is recognized among the ten leading scholars by Mallawaarachchi et al. (2020)  – which is considered as one of the most powerful practices able to promote the circularity of the economic system. Luca has published in leading international journals (e.g., International Journal of Production Economics, Ecological Economics, International Journal of Production Research, Business Strategy and the Environment) and conference proceedings. He is Member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Business Research and serves as Guest Editor for several journals. His studies are conducted in collaboration with scholars worldwide and with ENEA (Italian Agency for New Technologies, Energy, and Sustainable Economic Development).
