Abstract
Precision medicine is an emerging framework devoted to diseases treatment and prevention taking into account
individual variability. Network science is considered one of the most promising approaches for the
development of precision medicine: in fact, network medicine is a rapidly evolving field of medical research
aimed at identifying, preventing and treating diseases. This talk will show the methodological challenges
related to the study of biological complex systems and consequently to the development of precision
medicine. Some studies will be illustrated, showing the potentiality of network medicine approach applied
to the field of neuro-rehabilitation, to the prediction of new disease genes and to the characterization of
gene co-expression networks.

Manuela Petti received her M.Sc. Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Sapienza University
of Rome in 2011 and her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from University of Bologna Alma Mater
Studiorum in 2016. She was a visiting student with the University of Indiana at Bloomington (USA) in 2015.
She was a PostDoc at the Department of Computer, Control and Management Engineering of Sapienza
University of Rome from 2016 to 2018. Since 2011 she is a junior scientist at IRCCS Fondazione Santa
Lucia, Rome (Neuroelectrical Imaging and BCI Lab). Her research interests are in the area of biological
complex system study. In particular, she works at the estimation of brain connectivity,
biological networks analysis (e.g. brain networks, human interactome) and network medicine.
